CHAPTER 5

HERO OR ZERO?

“ONLINE POLLS show a sudden uptick in public sentiment in favor of Spider-Man. After tonight’s scare in Times Square, it would seem New York owes him a debt of gratitude.”

Peter gave a wan smile at the newscaster as he switched off the TV. It felt good to be appreciated. He glanced around his darkened room, looking for something to do. His eyes fell on the cell phone resting idly on his desk. Peter flipped it open, illuminating the screen.

The one and only Gwen Stacy smiled back at him. Peter snapped the phone shut. Nope. Thinking about Gwen leaving for England was not how he wanted to spend his evening.

Peter flopped onto the bed, blasting music in his earbuds and closing his eyes. Why couldn’t he turn off his brain? His eyes fluttered open and zeroed in on his closet with the open door. And then on his dad’s briefcase that sat right there on the floor. Nope. He wasn’t going to think about his parents, either. Or how he knew there was more to their sudden deaths than anyone was saying. Or that every time he brought it up to Aunt May, she abruptly changed the subject. He tried shutting his eyes once more, but the briefcase nagged at him.

Peter stormed toward the closet, slamming the door closed. He took a few steps back and then stopped. Forget it, Peter thought.

But he wasn’t getting any peace that night. He doubled back and yanked the closet door open. In one swift motion, he grabbed the briefcase and dumped its contents onto his desk.

A slew of unremarkable items formed a pile. A folder with the Oscorp twin-circles logo on it. A calculator. A subway token. A handwritten reminder about some random appointment. There had to be a clue in there somewhere. Peter sighed and pulled at one of his desk drawers, finding an old framed photo of him and his parents smiling happily in their living room.

He vaguely remembered that day. It’d been a rough afternoon for him. Something about not being able to figure out a key detail for his accelerated-science class project—those details were fuzzy now. But he could still vividly see his dad tousling his hair and smiling down at him. “You know,” his dad had said. “Every problem has a solution. Sometimes you just have to let it reveal itself.”

With a renewed sense of determination, Peter taped the photo to his wall. Then he hopped onto his computer, typing various search terms frantically. Seconds later, his printer started spitting out pages of maps. Pinning them to the wall, he started highlighting routes, drawing arrows, trying to connect the dots.

Where were you going? he scribbled on scraps of paper. Who were you running from? Why??? He posted these, as well.

Finally, he ran out of steam. Stepping back, he stared at the obsession wall he’d made, willing the answers to jump out at him. Nada. He cocked his head. Anything from this angle? Not even a hint.

Well, it was a start.
